About the Event

BPP and QM Bar Society are delighted to announce that our annual ‘Advocate of the Year 2024-25’ national mock trial competition is now open.

QM are looking for a team to take part in the regional heats. Advocate of the Year gives participants the unique opportunity to develop real-world legal skills in a competitive arena.  The competition involves preparing and delivering aspects of realistic cases, replicating the work of the junior Bar.  Actors will play the client roles, and competitors will be judged by BPP tutors, who are qualified lawyers with real trial experience.

All competitors will receive expert feedback and guidance, and the overall winner will be awarded a scholarship for BPP’s Barrister Training Course.  Other prizes will be awarded to the most promising advocates.

How it works

The competition is open to all students who are yet to commence their legal vocational training, and who have not taken part in our Advocate of the Year competition in previous years.

We are looking for a two-person team to take part in the competition. All teams must also have a reserve, who will be available to step in, in the unlikely event that a team member is unable to compete in the regional heats.

The Queen Mary Bar Society is looking forward to receiving applications and putting forward our two-person team to BPP.

Deadline for applications: Tues, 1 October 2024.

Applicants will be sent the written advocacy on October 1st, with ~1.5 week deadline. Team announcement October 18th.

Our two-person team will compete in the first round of Advocate of the Year, which will take place online, on Saturday 30 November 2024.  Your team will be allocated either a morning or afternoon trial.

The highest 16 performing individual advocates in the first round trials will qualify for a place in the Grand Final.  The Grand Final will take place at the Old Bailey in London on 29 March 2025, where the ultimate individual winner of the Advocate of the Year will be decided.
